Colonization had its impact on the Indian subcontinent to a large extent. From political system to educational system everything underwent a transformation. Indian society began to be modernized, and thus the education began embracing new courses and programs.

Importance of skilled professionals increased that led to the introduction of management courses in the country. Academics gave way to professional courses that slowly began to gain popularity. In 1959, Professor George Robbins of University of California was invited to help in setting up the All India Institute Management Studies. Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Ahmedabad were chosen to be the destinations for the two institutes. In 1961, the first Indian Institute of Management was established in Joka in the outskirts of Kolkata.

Indian Institute Management, Kolkata

The first IIM to be set up in India, the Postgraduate Programme in Management (PGPM) is its flagship program designed to produced managers and next generation business leaders. Started in 1994, the Post Graduate Programme in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM) is unique to

. The institute also offers Executive MBA programs for working professionals, doctoral programmes, and a host of other executive and distance education programmes.

Admission to the PGPM and PGDCM are conducted on the basis of the percentiles scored in the Common Admission Test (CAT). The admission process thereafter comprises a Group Discussion (GD) followed by a Personal Interview (PI).

For executive programmes, individuals with five years and above qualification are eligible to apply.

Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM)

Founded in 1953, the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM) was established in collaboration with the University of Calcutta, the government of West Bengal and the business community of the state in order to promote management education. It is the oldest management institute of the state and has acted as the mentoring institute of IIM Calcutta.

Some of the courses offered by IISWBM include:

Two-Year Full Time, MBA

Masters of Human Resource Management

Master of Public System Management

These three main courses are affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The rest of the courses offered by IISWBM, for example the post graduate diploma in Sports Management and others are accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The post graduate diploma in Sports Management is unique to the institute.

The admission procedure of the institute is similar to its counterpart IIM, Calcutta.

Graduation percentage and CAT percentiles are taken into consideration. This is followed by a GD and PI. This process is applicable to all the major programmes. For the other courses the institute conducts its own entrance examinations and has its own set of criteria.

IISWBM has an active placement cell that conducts placement programs every year. Till date the institute has a record of hundred percent placements. Leading corporate giants come to the institute in search of future business leaders.

Department of Business Management, University of Calcutta

As the demand for skilled professionals, increased MBA colleges began to increase in and around the city.

One of the oldest universities in the country

, the University of Calcutta opened its doors to management education in 1985.

Major programmes offered by the Department are Masters of Business Administration (Finance) and Masters in Human Resources and Organizational Management (MHROM).

The course has three major objectives:
